So I was sitting in Starbucks the other day – as often happens when I get bored of working from home with only my kitty as a companion – when I overheard 3 business people talking about their ‘terrible’ jobs and ‘tyrant’ boss. Munching on scones (which are uber fattening I may add) the trio varied in age, gender and nationality but they had one common thread that tied them together like brothers – they ALL hated their jobs, but were ‘stuck’ for one reason or another.

As I gazed at these three I thought “I’d rather live out of my car than have to go back to work in corporate America” then it dawned on me…

I’ve become unemployable…

How about you? How close are you to being truly unemployable? Have you quit your 9 to 5 yet, or are you still stuck in a job you despise for a variety of reasons. Maybe you tell yourself “I can’t quit I have a family to raise” – funny because MOST entrepreneurs I know started their business with a family at home and still made it big (notably: Mike Michalowicz, Johnny B Truant and Janine Allis). Or maybe it’s “I just don’t have any good ideas” – well why not take an entire weekend where all you do is brainstorm – then do this every week until you come up with a winner!

Being unemployable is both an awesome and scary feeling. I feel like I’ve reached a new plane in my life because I know I’ll never, ever go back to a ‘normal’ job. But I’ve also lost a great security blanket – because from now until doomsday I’ll be forced to support myself.

I have no 401k that is matched by some corporate entity, no retirement plan that is set up by my company, no insurance because I’m an entrepreneur and insurance companies can’t seem to grasp that we need health insurance too. Instead I have to fend for myself in some scary ways. I have to invest in Roth IRAs myself to make sure that I have a solid emergency fund and am saving for the future, I have to save enough money to help myself through a medical emergency until someone in the health industry decides to TAKE MY MONEY for a little insurance coverage.

This isn’t easy and it isn’t always fun… but you know what keeps me motivated day in and day out – FREEDOM. Because what I do may be hard and it may be scary but I am laying the foundation for freedom – both financially and emotionally – that will last the rest of my life.

How to know if you’re Unemployable too…

  1. Seeing people in suits makes you either want to cringe or give them a big hug and tell them ‘Run!!’
  2. Every time you’re in a business establishment that isn’t run properly you think ‘Gosh, I could do this! Just hand me over the reigns and I’ll get this biz into top shape in no time!’
  3. When your at your darkest moment  you consider getting a ‘real’ job and then shake yourself violently and consider the other options like: panhandling, living in your car and starting another business from your cardboard box home.
  4. The word ‘entrepreneur’ to you sounds like angels singing.
  5. You can’t fathom trading precious hours of your life for not nearly as precious dollars.
  6. You’d rather fall on your cocktail sword than work in a business you don’t own.
  7. You read this blog and don’t think “Get a job weird little crazy girl”.

So ask yourself the question… Are you unemployable? Even if you are currently working for the man but the idea of being  unemployable rings true with your very being then realize that the path of entrepreneurship is strong within you! Remember the Force lay dormant within Luke for years but once awakened led him to greater and greater heights. You can be LUKE if the entrepreneurial force is strong with you! And hey, if you ever need any help feel free to ask me (I’d love to be your Obi-Wan!)

    Maren,

I just found your blog by accident today and boy am I glad I did! I really like your style, and I too think that the word “entrepreneur” sounds like angels singing.

Working for yourself is all about the comfort and fear factor. People won't take the plunge, because they are terrified that they might actually succeed at whay they really love doing. Sometimes it just takes a good firing in order to get started.

I wanted to add another one to the list.

You hate saying this phrase “my boss”. Just thought about it while writing a post.

Being your own boss or an entrepreneur seems to be the dream a lot of people have yet far too many people don't do anything about. Either they have no idea where to start or are afraid to ask where to start or just don't care enough to do anything about it in the first place.

I must admit, I want to be an entrepreneur and am working hard at becoming one.

If you work hard at it you will get there – that is why 80% of would be entrepreneurs fail – they try a few times, then give up – you've got to be relentless and if one thing doesn't work try another. Cheers!

hahaha! I am completely unemployable! Ever since I got up half way thru a day at an office job and simply walked out. Never ever to return to that world. I immediately got a tattoo on my arm before becoming a horse groom and then a stripper. Ive never looked back and Ive been thru the entire check list! Especially during stripper burn out, Id STILL take twisted men messing with my sanity over a desk job and a boss.
In fact my next tattoo will be on my knuckles reading STAY FREE.
Here's to living life YOUR way!
I spent years wondering when I got to do what I want to do with my life instead of 90% of my time and money going to faceless corporations. I got so sick of my friends telling me that “thats life” and “everyone hates their job, just learn to live with it”. Nope. No way. We are not put on this earth to be machines. We are here to follow our hearts and live fully in our freedom of choice. Heaven is on Earth, we live it every day :)

4 years ago I quit working for the boss man and life has never been better. I don't make as much money, but then again I don't work as nearly as hard as I use too, my choice. All work and no play makes me boring boy! I have never felt as free or as happy as I do now working for myself, doing my own thing. I will get to the top of the mountain, however I'm not rushing or killing myself to get there…

this is great Maren. I've definitely become more and more unemployable as I get older. I graduate from college officially in August, although I already walked at the ceremony and talking with all my fellow students they all seem to be worried so much about job security and what's going to happen if they don't find a job. I feel bad for them because they have been working hard for the past 4-6 years and are going to end up working a job that doesn't pay them what they are worth and doesn't really fulfill what their dreams are.

They tell themselves that it's okay and that they aren't meant to have fun until they're retired and I really struggle with this. Maybe it's the Entrepreneur in me who realizes that each day is an adventure and we need to live it to the fullest. It is however pretty scary when they ask me how much money I make and that has been changing from month to month depending on how many clients I pick up. They think that what we do is risky, while I think what they do is risky. You definitely proved to me that I am officially unemployable.

Oh Maren, I LOLed through your list. I totally 110% relate to each one. It's a good place to be and it's nice to have so much company here :)

I hadn't realized I had become “unemployable”, but I will probably start using that word more often now. It's really accurate. It just has a different weight/feel to it when used in this context. Liberating rather than limiting. A sign of empowerment rather than supposed failure.

Thank you for elaborating on your experiences with this new state of being. Here's to being unemployable forevarrr!

  • http://www.nextlevelblogger.com/about Christian Russell

Very nice Maren. I haven't worked for the man in 10 years. It's true that a lot of successful entrepreneurs simply don't have a choice in the matter. Having no safety net is a big motivator. It's amazing what you can do when you have no other options :-)

  • http://inthelimelight.net Jonathan

I am so beyond unemployable it's not even funny, however for the moment I am still employed. I can't say I am happy about it, I am trying hard to learn how to stop it, but right now, I am an employee.

Just today I got an email from the compliance department of my company for some ad I ran trying to promote *their* products that apparently did not have prior approval. I didn't know I needed prior approval.

Have you seen office space? Where are those TPS reports.

We said, Nike Air force , is the air force 1, this is a very classic shoes, in fact, is the first basketball shoe, but now many people regard it as a trend to wear shoes, air force does not contain a dunk series, air force 1 Nike air force shoes of the hind paw with air max air cushion, and this is his only technical, but the air force by air force 1 shoes the classic shape of a large number of shoe lovers around the world welcomed more than 20 years, consistently.

It seems I'm unemployable too, but for another reason: I don't give a damn. I used to work with passion, but it burned out and now it's over. My days used to be 8am to 8pm, with cases of 7am to 11pm. When I reduced them to 9 to 5 it was feeling like heaven, but now it's again too much.

I changed 3 jobs in 3 years, and every time I walk into offices populated by “9 to 5″ people who behave like factory workers. Flat personality, no sparkle, swap in, work, swap out. Just a few of them take a year off, travel the world (unthinkable in the country I come from, you'd be labeled as a heretic pariah by your own family). Maybe it's me, but I see everywhere people with the idea “find yourself a hole and work there until retirement”.

I really have to find something better to do than wasting my life in this vicious circle! Brainstorming time! :D

  • Diego

    Hi Niki,
I'm sorry to hear that you feel as bad as me, I wish you best of luck. :)
To answer your question, I'm currently living in Ireland (where traveling is considered a good experience), but I'm originally from Italy (from an area where it's a common belief that people have to find a job as soon as possible and keep it until retirement). My biggest regret is not having left my home town earlier… As Karen said, it took me a burn out, I told everybody to fu** off and I came to Ireland. Much better here, but now I tasted freedom and I want MORE! :D

To everybody, if you come to Ireland let me know, I'll make you taste some REAL Italian cuisine from an area that not many people know! I could almost say it's a niche by itself (but I'm not going to become a cook and get into the stress of the dinner rush LOL!). :)

It's hard to take anybody seriously that makes an analogy to a child's film set in a time long long ago in a place which was far far away. If you're going to go into business for yourself, you ought to have more than a 12 year old mentality.

Usually people that feel and respond with such criticism are just angry at their own level of oppression. In their jealous internal rage, they must find fault at mere ideas that would let them escape. If the only point of attack is against the basis of the analogy, then they must have agreed with the premise in the first place. Blaze on.

  • William Robison

NO..WAIT! Ive gotta wait until XYZ before I…. So many people have too many “but Ive got to ____ before I can ___”. Chris has(had) a baby on the way and still managed to fulfill a dream, cast doubt and go for it. Now most of us have seen and are watching his story. We must push away from the butwaitIvegottablankfirst attitudes and start now!

  • William Robison

Evolution is the way to stay unemployable. Do not fear this economy. Ive been unemployable for the last 7 years. Ive beat out 95% of the other people that started in the same business as I am in by “Evolution”. Learning the be adaptable to change is critical to long-term success. So, you ask…. Well, Ive been in real estate, and have changed niches more than some have vacationed. This has been critical to success. I've been out of business 3 times in real estate, but evolve to stay alive. Not bad for top 5%. Now….on to something new………

I like what you wrote, especially the last sentences.
it's always really comforting to know that I'm not alone in all these thoughts!
at least I know that I'm still not 'crazy'. that there're always others like me somewhere in each corner of this globe!

I think I would have been dead from a stroke or a heart attack if I hadnt walked of my technical job where the lead tech, not our boss treated me and the other techs as if we were children! this he was doing because of his stress out side of the job. I have never felt better since leaving this job. I now have time to exersice and run my own lawn care business.

  • http://www.Escapingthe9to5.com/ Maren Kate

I like that, the focus on adaptability, my Mom has always said: the only consistent thing is change and if one as an entrepreneur can embrace that then I believe the sky really is the limit.

  • http://www.Escapingthe9to5.com/ Maren Kate

That is awesome that you had the courage to leave, so few people do these days it seems. Fear is paralyzing most of them.

  • Craig H

Having read all these posts of people who say they are unemployable and why, is beginning to make me feel that I am unemployable too!

Whilst I am still currently employed I am working on a side busines, which I hope can help me escape the 9-5, or at least help fund one of my larger scale ideas (Funding for startups in the UK is almost impossible to get at the moment).

As it has been mentioned there is a massive fear involved in leaving employment, which I am conquering, but spending a lifetime totally uninterested in what i'm doing as an alternative? We'll they might as well put me in a pine box right now! lol

  • http://www.escapefrom9-5.com Work Sucks

I'm completely unemployable as well, and I love it!
It sounds cliche but the best thing to do is sit down and figure out exactly what you like to do! (No, sleeping in is not a good answer!) but what really makes you feel good when you do it? It's usually helping someone… :) I have a similar site like this called escapefrom9-5.com – it's got a few products you might be interested in!

  • http://satyacolombo.com Satya, Fierce Wisdom

I've been using this line for years — I'm SO unemployable. My last job “real” job was in 2007, and I hadn't had a real job before that, since 2001. Once you're on this road, there's no turning back. Some people like going in to a job, and making cool shit happen (or most likely , sort of cool or really lame stuff). Good for them, I just don't get it… ! :)

  • Alex

Yep, part of the unemployable club. Oh, and you should check out a video from Ignite Phoenix called “Genetically Unemployable” great, brief and to the point.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgbjnVAB184

I think you'd be great on one of those events!

  • http://www.Escapingthe9to5.com/ Maren Kate

Awesome Craig! I bet you are unemployable :) because someone who is employable wouldn't be thinking that way.

  • pigbitinmad

Really I thought you were talking about the United States where the HR departments are trained to sniff out the most insignificant gap on your resume and interrogate you about it as if you were guilty of terrorism or both. It is inconcievable in this country that you would take even a minute away from your job. If work is not your number one priority in life, you are a socialist (which in this country is equated with Stalinism and Bolshevism).

My problem is I cannot think of a way to make money. Have been unemployed since last April. I don't think anyone will ever hire me again because small businesses will cease to exist unless we purposely Boycott all Fortune 500 companies. And I mean EVERYTHING.

(I have never worked for Corporate America because I have despised those A-holes since the 80's)
