So today I realized “oh my gosh!! I’m at my 100th blog post” needless to say I am psyched. So to pop the cork on the proverbial bottle of champagne I am going to release a free mini course within this post on four ways to monetize your blog. This is going to be short(ish), sweet and to the point, if you want FAR more instruction and hundreds of hours of tutoring on how to build an internet business empire check out the end of the post.

How to monetize your blog | 4 ultimate business in a box blueprints!

ebook business model

7 easy steps

Choose a topic, preferably your passion

Create a table of contents this will act as your road map

If you can’t write, record & have it transcribe, if you don’t have enough to say its time to learn a little more before writing an ebook (duh!)

Use .PDF (save as .PDF) add pictures, graphs & graphics to look more pro.

write every day once a day for a set time, write as much or as little as you think covers your topic, then save as .PDF after proof read

designing a cover

Best to get it done professionally unless you have photoshop & are good at design. Options: 99designs, eLance, etc.

marketing it

Upload it to e-junkie to sell it (super simple to use and cheap)

Twitter (tweet it man!)

Facebook fan page (great place to get together with like minded peeps!)

Social bookmark the site it is selling on (delicious and such)

Do a video of what your eBook is about and why people should buy it (put it on Youtube with good keywords)

Affiliate market… try paydotcom.com and clickbank.com

to sell or to tempt opt ins with?

create an opt in package (like a give away or something) where someone gets incredible value for free. Then when you let out a product that person is already ‘primed’ with the sense that you let out great content so they are more likely to think “you gave X for free, what amazing info is contained in Z if i pay!’

build your list before you launch so you can do pre launch offers & develop affiliates that way

one day… using your ebook to springboard you into a real book? lulu.com

nothing says ‘credentials’ than when someone has written a book, even if they haven’t sold 20 copies. You could get speaking events etc, and use it to propel your personal brand. Plus it is just cool to call yourself an ‘author’

membership site model

community blueprint

the lifespan of a member and why the community is essential… it just is! Ha, but really it is a must to develop a community, either through your blog, your social networks or develop a paid membership course.

price point & what to offer (rule of 15)

anything under $15 people are usually more likely to keep on their cards for a longer time, because under $15 you can kind of forget about… but you’ll have to get a bigger crowd to make a profit, over $15 and you may as well price at a premium like $37-$57 or even $97 if your stuff is really, really good (IBMA).

wishlist member

quick overview of wishlist member and how simple it is

growing a free community into a paid community

blogging first, fan page, creating all sorts of places for people to connect with you and connect back… then launch a ‘premium’ paid membership

affiliate model

building an email list so you can offer affiliate things later

must make sure you chose your affiliates carefully or your carefully crafted trust could go south with a crap offering

offering affiliates on site

have ads? offer affiliates banner ads and others, or go through paydot.com, clickbank or entrecard

run through of e-junkie, clickbank & paydot.com & finding affiliates through relationships

consulting model (webinar/in person/phone)

webinar (gotowebinar.com) first free, then paid (list building)

great part is you are building your brand & collecting names for the lists

in person

have the ‘work with me’ offer where you will meet someone in person or over the phone to do one on one consulting for their business/brand/project look up consultant fees here.

Hope that at least got your creative juices flowing and if you are tickled pink to start an internet business today than I suggest you join Internet Business Mastery the very same course I took when I got my start online and the number 1 reason I attribute my business success too, both on and offline! The guys behind it are amazing and the knowledge you will receive in IBMA will change your life… promise! If you don’t believe me notice how often I offer affiliate products, it is like NEVER, I only ever promote Sterling & Jay’s internet business academy because I believe in it so much and have seen the wonders it has made in my life.

I love Kurt Vonnegut, granted our political, religious and sociological views different massively. But he was an amazing, inspiring writer whom wrote a treasure trove of classics. The other day I was rereading Time Quake and a sentence out of that book stuck with me… Vonnegut writes that him and a friend decided that “only 17% of people in the world have lives worth living”. Now many people disagree with him, as do I to some extent (like I believe almost all people have some kernel of worthwhile in them – sans predators, perverts and sadists), but the power of the statement shook me to my core. After I read that I continually asked myself “Am I part of the 17%”? It is a sobering concept to think about, because you can have all the riches in the world and still be worthless as a person. In the same breath you can be desperately poor while being an angel among men.

So today I encourage you to look at your life, your dreams and your entrepreneurial path and ask yourself if you are part of the 17 or part of the 83?

Here is how I do it:

Is my business giving back anything?

Is my life giving back anything to others?

Do I bring happiness to others or sorrow?

How can I become more like the 17% and less like the 83?

Answer these questions honestly and you will find yourself striving for more. More freedom to do what you like, more inspiration to help others and more gumption to lead an extraordinary life as opposed to just a run in the mill “existence”. I also focus on my blog trying to be part of the 17% of blogs in the world that are worthwhile vs. the 83% that are just make money online get rick quick scheme jargon. I believe in getting rich quickly, but the problem is their is a BIG word missing… the saying should read: You can get rich quick, but it will be very HARD & you must be VERY CREATIVE.

Alright, that is my short rant for the day, stay tuned I have two AWESOME cewebrity interviews coming up this week that you won’t want to miss, they’ll inspire the pants of you… literally, you’ll be pantless.

These are 7 amazing tools that every entrepreneur can use to help them make money online and build a mobile business, which is key to escaping the 9 to 5 and living the life you want. Try them out, give me feedback on which you love the best and feel free to add to the list in the comments section below!

Basecamphq – this is a site that me and my virtual workers use constantly to manage projects, keep notes, count time spent on each client, etc. For a low monthly cost Basecamp can help you make more money, get really organized and fertilize a truly mobile business model where you never have to meet any employees face to face, but still get a heck of a lot done.

Teqpad.com - this site offers a lot of free metrics on your website or blog, I am not sure if it is as accurate as other paid platforms but it gives you at least a good idea of what is going on behind the scenes. It also offers helpful hints and shows the amount of backlinks you are getting from all the major search engines.

E.ggtimer - not only can you time boiling an egg with this online bad boy, but you can make more money by seeing the EXACT amount of time you are spending on each client, each task, etc. This has a two fold benefit for businesses, especially those who deal on a project to project basis, you can make sure you are being as productive as possible while ensuring you are getting enough buck for your bang.

Skype - I have a business phone, just like all big businesses, but my business phone isn’t sitting an office, its mobile, just like my business. My business line is linked through Skype (you can buy a dedicated line for cheap) and then redirects to my cell when I’m not online. This way I don’t have to give out my personal number and it also looks waaay more professional. Almost as professional as using the word ‘waaay’.

Rocking Business Cards - Yes, having an awesome business card does make you more money and helps you network, connect and interact with people you normally wouldn’t have much to talk to about. The business cards from taste of ink studios may be a bit more pricey but they are well worth it. Coming in all shapes and sizes and being made out of materials like silk or plastic helps give your card that *bling* factor that impresses so many with so little. Also it is a great way to strike up a conversation with some big wig who normally wouldn’t give you the time of day.

The Completely Mobile Business Office – this is my number ONE secret for complete mobility and it has cost a fraction of what other businesses pay in rent. It holds all my documents, all my ideas and gives me unlimited connections with people all over the world, it’s my Macbook people and for $999 any aspiring business owner can afford one… if you are really serious about making money and launching your free wielding entrepreneurial journey that is.

Evernote - an awesome space to organize your thoughts, ideas and notes. This truly is a gold mine of zaniness where you can spread out all the projects, notes and designs you are working on and get a better idea of the concept you are going for. Try it out and you’ll fall in love.

So hopefully those 7 killer tools will help you build a more mobile business, make more money online especially and get more organized and productive. If you have other tools you use that I left out please share them in the comments section since I am always looking for new ways to manage my business and life.

I am reading through Start with Why by Simon Sinek, it is truly an eye opening read. But instead of just putting it on my reading list and hoping some of you will pick it up I am going to sum up some of the best parts and explain why WHY is the single best question that will lead to massive success.

In Sinek’s book he explains his concept of ‘The Golden Circle’ which is key to understanding the importance of presenting your businesses WHY even before it’s WHAT or HOW. Look closely at the below and take in this entrepreneurial advice because it may radically change the way you do business and make you vastly more successful and happy then you are now.

Think of it this way, what do most people normally ask at mixers? The famed So… what do you do? this is answered with: I’m a doctor, I’m a line cook or I work at Microsoft. You can only learn so much from someone by asking them ‘what they do’ instead I am starting to adopt another approach: Why do you do whatever it is you do? This is probably far more off putting than a simple what do you do but can also dig far deeper into the reason said person lives and works.

So now imagine this scenario

1st example:

Person: “What do you do Maren?”

Maren: “I have a social media marketing business… oh and we build websites”

2nd example (with an emphasis on my WHY):

Person: “What do you do Maren?”

Maren: “Well, I run a company where we believe the only way to succeed in business is to innovate, adapt and stay abreast of cutting edge technology. We believe in serving the 20% of entrepreneur’s who embrace innovation as much as we do and helping them explode their success in the online world through truly connecting with their customer base on a personal and profound level. If you fit into that 20% of free thinking, early adapters then we can definitely work well together.”

Now some of the people I respond to are going to think “hmm… weird chick” and move on to another table, others are going to be like “Oh my gosh, I’ve been looking for someone like you for years, I need help marketing and believe in your passion and philosophy. Here is my card, call me on Monday and we’ll set up a meeting.” I’ll take my chances on being labeled a freak with 80% of the people I meet if the 20% that matter fall in love with my mantra because I put my WHY at the forefront.

How this applies to you

Ask yourself what you do, how you do it and then finally WHY your business (or potential business) exists. If you can’t find a good why then you need to scrap your business model and innovate into something that will appeal wildly to a few and possibly turn the rest off.

Reformat your business and marketing strategies to put your WHY at the forefront. I am in the middle of re-doing my businesses website, for a while it has been plain Jane, but now I want to revamp it keeping my WHY in mind all the way. I want to have a site that will welcome those who connect with Oracle Launch’s reason for being and who resonate deeply with our mission. The rest, well they can go to some boring suit and tie marketing firm.

Become an evangelist of your WHY. If you don’t believe in your reason for being 100,000% no one else will. You must be quite literally over the top, in love with your businesses mission statement. If you aren’t or can’t muster up all that excitement for what you are doing in your entrepreneurial journey, maybe it is time to take a different path or dramatically change the direction your business is coming from.

Hope this helps, I strongly suggest picking up Sinek’s book and giving it a good read. Or do what I do and download the audio to listen to while you multi-task!

P.S. Applying the golden circle and the why principle to your blog works wonders too, I’m in the midst of doing that myself!

Recently I’ve noticed an amazing and exciting trend within my own blog and others who I read avidly, its a practice I call building a comment community. Let me explain this blogging tip that I think is a good ear mark of a healthy blog. Some bloggers respond to the comments they receive after a post, others don’t do this so much. I learned from Pat Flynn in one of his stellar posts that responding to comments is essential to building a community around your blog… but even more interesting is when you notice the commentators responding to each other. This is truly a community being formed around whatever you blog’s niche is based on. So if you have a food blog where those who comment ask about recipes and then there are some “leaders” within your food blog who will routinely respond to others comments, even often before you do, this is a GREAT sign of a healthy and interactive blog.

Here are some tips I’ve gathered on creating a community within your site:

Ask questions. This is pertinent to building a conversation within your blog. It doesn’t matter what the question is, just make sure it is something that will engage your audience. Examples would be “what is stopping you in your escape from the 9 to 5″ or “what blogging tips would you find beneficial for a blog post to be written on” etc.

Set up action items. This is a challenge you lay down to your readers asking them to join in the ‘community’ and start really acting on all the info they are getting. Whether it be “go get your LLC” or “Tweet to me telling me who your favorite entrepreneur is and why” this seems to work well at building up a community effort around your blog.

Be relevant. This is simple but important. It is necessary for you to be relevant to your readers, not relevant to search engines or for SEO. What matters the most is your readers loving your content, if you have that you’ll rank well no matter what. Look at Johnny B. Truant he has made it very clear he doesn’t write for Google yet he has built a super loyal following up around his blog.

Most importantly is writing from your heart, if you show you truly care about your audience and the message you believe in you’ll build a community around your blog no matter what. People want to belong to a “Tribe” and they need a leader, if you can corner a very small niche and build up this community and lead them with your thoughts you will become part of the 20% of people in the world who make 80% of the difference.

Now get out there and start building communities around your comment sections!

This is an interview with Michael Feil of michaelfeil.com, Michael is an internet marketing guru and graciously granted me an interview. For those of you who blog, do business or are on your path to extraordinary entrepreneurship read up, because Mike can help you figure out how to best network & market yourself online to reach your goals.

How’d you get started in online marketing?

I started about 7 or 8 years ago doing autosurfing and “get rich quick schemes.” I made a little money and lost a lot of money. It was a good learning experience for me.

What kind of 9 to 5 job did you escape from?

I have my undergrad in Sociology and my Masters in Health Care Administration. I was in the business side of health care for several years (hospice and long term care) and I got tired of Corporate America so I just quit. I am also a Sign Language Interpreter so after I quit my health care job I started my own business doing Sign Language interpreting. During that time I also started my online business with 5 other guys. We have rolled out 2 online marketing courses already and have some great plans for the rest of 2010.

Our company is call The Empowered Tribe. Our philosophy is that we can’t succeed in this business alone and we need to rely on each other for accountability, traffic generation, and special skill sets that each one of us bring to the table.

Together we have made tens of thousands of dollars in just a few short months and we have never met in person yet. That is the power of the internet! However, we will be meeting for the first time at the end of March in San Diego, CA and we will be doing a live event for people that are interested in learning how to monetize online. This will be a great time to network with industry leaders and we will be co-hosting a charity event with Raven Starre.

Break down the ways you monetize your blog or online business(es) and if you have other streams of passive income that you’d like to share please elaborate on them.

There are several ways I monetize online. On my blog http://michaelfeil.com you will see tabs up towards the top. Let me discuss some of these tabs and how I monetize through them.

1. The first monetization tab is called “Featured” and this is where I highlight the network marketing company that I am involved with. People can come here and get all the necessary info they need in order to join my organization. The product I have is very unique and there is no other product out there like it. Plus the social media marketing and tribe building education that the person gets when they are in business with me is second to none!

2. The second monetization tab is my “Mentoring” tab. This tab discusses why it’s important to have a mentor and if someone is interesting in my mentoring services then they can purchase it right there on the page.

3. The third monetization tab is my “Live Events” tab. This talks about hiring me to come to your live event and speak on a variety of topics. It also explains how my business partners and I can come to your live event and do a whole social media / tribe building workshop. It’s a very great time and well worth the money! In fact we are doing one in San Diego, CA on March 26 – 28, 2010. You can find all the info at http://tribesyndicationrevolution.com.

4. The fourth monetization tab is my “Resources” tab. This tab lists several of the affiliate programs that I am linked up with. When someone buys from my affiliate link I will make a commission.

5. Right under the “Resources” tab is my “Facebook” tab. For a price I can build people a custom Facebook welcome page for their Fan Pages.

6. Right under the “Facebook” tab is my “Website Building” tab where I show people how they can easily build sales pages themselves through a product called XSite Pro. I have created a video tutorial series that goes along with the XSite Pro software and people can purchase my video tutorial series that will help them get the most of the XSite Pro software.

So those are six ways that I monetize just through my blog. I also monetize through the online marketing courses that I develop and teach. Depending on the time of year it is you can get more information on these courses at http://tribemastermindformula.com. If the class is closed you can opt-in to get information on when the next class is starting up.

What would be your 3 top tips for budding internet marketers to take heed of?

1. This industry is not a get rich quick industry. I thought it was when I first started 8 years ago and lost a lot of money. Once I learned that I have to actually build a business I started to become successful.

2. Brand yourself, not your company. When you start to brand yourself people will see you as a leader in this industry and then they will start to follow you. Once they start to follow you can then start to take the conversation offline and get to know them on a more personal level and “interview” them to see what they are really looking for. Maybe you can help them by mentoring them, direct them to one of your affiliate products, introduce them to your network marketing company, doing a joint venture with them, etc. The important thing is getting to know them personally and creating that trust. Once the trust has been established the possibilities are endless.

3. Build your business through the Tribe Concept. I can do a whole 2 hour lecture on this but it basically means that you are to go out and find about 5 or 6 peoples that have the same goals and aspirations as you do and you meet a few times a week to syndicate each other’s VALUABLE (that’s the key word) material all over the social media sites to get back links and massive exposure to your website or blog. There are many different principles to this kind of marketing which again is too long to get into now, but believe me, it works!

What is the single best action you’ve taken that has positively influenced your biz and life?

To find and PAY an already successful mentor that helped me get to where I am today. I was struggling before I got help via a mentor, but when I broke down and paid someone that is already successful and did exactly what they told me to do I then started to make money online. Success didn’t come overnight. It was s stepping stone process and like I said, I followed every instruction to the “T” and I started to see results.

The second biggest thing I did was find a good group a guys to go into business with. We talk daily, have become best friends, hold each other accountable, and are actually making money online.

To sum things up I just want to say there is no overnight success. Everything takes time so don’t worry that you’re not making money yet. If you follow the right steps and principles you will start to see success. Get with a mentor to show you the RIGHT ropes, and then seek out a group of people that are like minded and have the same goals as you do. Then start working with them creating projects and joint ventures.

Thank you Maren for this interview and if anyone has any further questions about what I have talked about you can contact me at mike@michaelfeil.com or Skype me at michaelfeil.

Thank you Mike!

So what did everyone think of this awesome interview? Do you have a better sense of marketing yourself and your brand online… I love how the comments section of Escapingthe9to5 has lately become a kind of conversation area, where others respond to comments and talk amongst themselves. That is the BEST usage of a comment area because it is truly a mini-mastermind group Thanks all of you who participate!

If you want to truly live an extraordinary life, fueled by income streams you create, it’s imperative to have nothing to lose. I know that may sound unreasonable, irresponsible and like a misguided way to escape the 9 to 5 but in my entrepreneurial journey I’ve noticed it is the only way to go. So shake off your defensive about why you ‘can’t’ afford to jump head first into becoming an extraordinary entrepreneur and instead see why you can’t afford not to.

How to jumpstart your entrepreneur’s adventures

First thing you have to do is realize that extraordinary entrepreneurs live outside of societal norms 9 times out of 10. So don’t go chasing the dream of escaping the 9 to 5 and living the four hour work week then be surprised when you have to step way outside of your comfort zone to do it. People often say “But I have kids, a marriage, a job, a house, X, Y or Z how can I escape and live life on my own terms?”. Well I’ll tell you one thing, the path ISN’T the one you are currently on. But in reality you still are the only one that can decide which path will lead you to escape the rat race permanently… there is no quick fix, no magic bullet and no success pill.

Here are some jewels of advice on how to jump start your entrepreneur’s journey

Decide how much you want it. Rate on a scale of 1-10 how badly you want to live life on your own terms, whether that be making millions, living abroad, traveling constantly or adopting 15 children and raising them all in private schools. If you aren’t writing an 9 or 10 then this goal isn’t the one for you. You aren’t passionate about it to make the sacrifice and think outside of the box enough to make it happen.

Get out of your comfort zone so much you aren’t comfortable in it anymore. For the last year I have spent so much time getting out of my comfort zone it is weird when I’m”in it”at all. I can’t watch TV for more than an hour without getting incredibly antsy. I can’t do the ‘normal’ things most people fill their day with, instead I am always wanting to push the envelope, to work towards my goals, to experience new and exciting things. At first getting out of my comfort zone was SOO hard that it was nearly crippling but now I can honestly say I’ve never been more comfortable in my own skin and outside of the normal ‘comfort zones’.

Make it so failure is not an option. This may sound fool hearty and many people would disagree but I think the best way to learn how to swim is to have to or you’ll sink. Every major leap I’ve taken in my entrepreneurial journey, or even life, has been prompted by “I really can’t fail on this one”… It is a funny thing what the mind does once you take the option of failure out of the equation and instead focus solely on the goal. My first goal was 10k a month from my business, failure wasn’t an option since if I failed I’d be broke, so I had to focus, focus, focus on succeeding and it helped by envisioning my monthly monetary goal. 5 months later, I made it, and today I cashed in another $3500 check and MAN it feels good.

Do and keep doing. Whether you try 50 things and fail at all of them or try two things and succeed on the second round it is VITAL to take action and keep going even after “failure”. Instead of focusing on a failure, use it as a learning experience and pick yourself back up so you can get back on the saddle again. I’ve done this countless times and each time I fall nowadays I get back on faster and ride with more endurance. Practice makes perfect and taking no action makes for a bunch of ‘what ifs’ – the worst type of regret in the world.

Action Jackson (steps you can take NOW to get closer to the goal)

List one thing you could do tomorrow to get you closer to your dream life

List the worst possible outcome if you fail miserably at escaping the 9 to 5 and then ask yourself how you would realistically recover (i.e. if my business tanks, I lose all my money and have not a CENT I would move in with friends/family, bartend for money and start new businesses in the off hours I wasn’t working)

This is the second time since I started this blog that I am sharing one of my fictional short stories, I love to write and not always about business… let me know what you think!

He had hit it big when he snagged a 5 year contract to be the Goodman’s Goodies spokesperson. That’s the reason I started hating him I suppose, because he had made it in showbiz so fast and I hadn’t. Maybe not made it per say, but at least he had gotten his crunchy, brown foot in the door.

I was a screenwriter, though I had never actually finished a complete screenplay. So I guess it would be more accurate to say I wanted to be a screenwriter, someday. To pay the bills I had been reduced to writing scripts for shlocky late night reality dating shows. Every night I sat alone in my dingy living room watching one of the morally reprehensible episodes I helped create, and every night I would have to watch his smiling, round face pushing Goodman’s Goodies during the commercial breaks. I knew as I sat there alone on my out of date sofa that two doors down was the guy who had been parading all over the television screen that evening in the company of chocolate chips and lollipops. He was probably sipping champagne and toasting his success in a hot tub full of young starlets that hung on his every word. It made me sick.

He didn’t deserve the success he had fell into, just because of his color and what he was. He even had the nerve to rub it in my face. Earlier that day when he was out walking his dog (or should I say the dog was walking him) he had idled in front of my humble abode just to rattle on about how star struck he was now that he was working with some of the industries greats. He had met Mrs. Butterworth, the Pillsbury Doughboy even the Keebler Elfs, granted he said the elves were kind of divas but it was the principle of it all. He was bragging, watching to see my eyes glaze over in jealousy. Watching to see me squint from the stars glow reverberating off his hard body.

I couldn’t sleep that night so I lay in bed eating Crack n’ Snack (Goodman’s Goodies knock off version of Rice Krispy squares) and watching an investigative reporter countdown the top 10 perfect murders that had been pulled off over the last century. Murder number ten included a lover’s quarrel and a wood chipper, murder nine was a mob hit and a body sinking to the bottom of the Hudson. By murder number 3 I realized there was a common thread between all perfect murders, leaving no evidence. As I pondered this the investigative reporter said “after the break we’ll here the true story of a child murderer who got rid of her victims by feeding them to swine”, then he appeared, big as life, dancing with marshmallows shining into my darkened bedroom. At that moment I knew what I had to do.

I dressed in the dark and left the house resolute. Two houses down I rapped on the door lightly. After a moment my neighbor, looking sleepy appeared. He looked at me quizzically and I explained I needed to talk to him. He ushered me in and I asked him if anyone was home, fortunately no. I took it as a sign from above that this was the night it had to be done. My neighbor asked me if I’d like anything to drink. “Milk” I said solemnly. He brought me a large glass and sat across from me. “This isn’t right,” I started, “I shouldn’t be made to feel inferior everyday by the likes of someone like you”. He looked confused and started to ask what I meant by the likes of him. “You know what I mean” I said irritably and lit a cigarette. It was time. I got up and walked over to him, towering over him as he sat there. “What are you doing friend?” he said his voice quivering but still with the hopeful, perkiness that landed him the Goodman’s Goodies deal. “Neighbor, pal?” he asked, pleading at this point. Then I snapped his head off just like that.

About an hour later I had destroyed all the evidence. Finished the rest of him off with the large glass of milk he’d handed me himself. Now that’s irony. Tell you the truth it was quiet nice. I’d always had a taste for gingerbread. Granted eating a whole gingerbread man was a little daunting but I had finished what I started and there wasn’t a crumb. It was truly the perfect crime, no evidence, no known motive. One day he was here and the next he wasn’t. No one would be the wiser. Goodman’s would have to find a new spokesperson, maybe the Peacan Sandies girl, she never got very much attention. The gingerbread man had always had a monopoly in the living cookie arena but that day was over. I’d imagine if they knew I’d be getting thank you cards from Oreos, Shortbread and Oatmeal Raisins everywhere.

Two days later the cop cars were in front of his house. They talked to everyone on the block. I was the one that suggested maybe he got tired of the spotlight, maybe he decided he wanted a simpler life, maybe he pulled a Thoreau and took off to find himself. After a few days the news crews stopped doing segments from his front yard and the cops came by less and less. By the time a month had passed everyone in the neighborhood had pretty much moved on. Some thought he ran off with a starlet, some thought he disappeared and most just didn’t care. I should have been celebrating, toasting myself and the fact that I didn’t have to feel like a failure anymore, but I wasn’t. It was the oddest thing, and I think it might have been brought on by the fact that I had been reading through Poe’s the telltale heart. But every time after that I saw a Goodman’s goodies commercial late at night or walked by the sweets isle at the grocery store I got a sharp, throbby ache. Instead of a guilty conscious I had developed a guilty gut.

I have found myself lately in a internet business/blog funk, not that I don’t love my blog (**self hug**) but because it is easy for me to get maniacal about the number of comments, page views etc Escaping the 9 to 5 gets. The number of page views has only been growing, but I want reader interaction to grow as well and since with all things in life it takes a lot of hard work… I get frustrated. Today I heard someone say an old colloquialism “don’t dress for the job you have, dress for the job you want” and I thought… presto, that’s it, that is how to excel at writing a blog… you write for the blog you want, not the one you have.

Too often with our blogs we get into funks and think “no one is reading this” so we just kind of churn out crap because we’ve read Problogger & Copyblogger and 1000 other sites that preach for you to constantly put out content. I myself have made a goal to blog 6 days out of 7, but what I forgot in my goal was to blog only about the most EXCELLENT stuff I can think of. Not crap like “Steps to starting a small business” or other generic internet business bunk. Instead I (we) need to get back to our roots, to blog for other’s benefit and not for search engines, to blog to build communities of like minded people all going towards one goal, to really strive to start a revolution with each post!

So here are some ways I am going to start writing for the blog I want not the blog I have…

I am going to only share things that I think are cutting edge and/or INCREDIBLY beneficial to my readers. Nothing generic, link bait-y or search engine (over) optimized will come from these fingers anymore.

I am going to still blog 6 days out of 7 but now I am going to DOUBLE the amount of time I spend in my blog prep instead of just going through my list of keywords and being like “yes, you, come here and be my keyword to build a blog around” from now on I’ll build keywords around the blog posts instead.

I may (i said MAY) start proofreading…

I will start reading my own posts before publishing to make sure they inspire you, the reader, the reason I write this thing in the first place. I want you to read my blog and say “Geez, I have GOT to get out of this 9 to 5 job, NOW, this girl with the weird writing made me literally giddy with excitement about starting the next chapter in my life and becoming an extraordinary entrepreneur, and by darn I will do it!”

I want to start publishing reports on my income, my blog stats, etc. so I can become even more transparent to others in an effort to help motivate the few that matter to really dive head first into this crazy life of entrepreneurship.

Every time I sit down to write a post I will imagine 10,000 people will read it and thus I will write with all the gusto I have to try and move those readers into action and towards the path of escaping the 9 to 5 for good.

I will write for my core group, my reason WHY, my “tribe” which are the few that truly are passionate about living life on their own terms, are crazy about entrepreneurship and are dedicated to building an extraordinary business that brings them joy and fulfillment.

How can you write for the blog you want, not the one you have? How can you apply this principle to your job, your relationship, your hobbies… if you treat everything like what you want it to be not what it is, you’ll be surprised at the number of times things change to fit your perception.

Action step:

Start wring for the blog you want, not the one you have

Start living for the life you want, not the one you have

Today I am doing a case study on a blogger who is really killing it, he has gotten to a 43,871 Alexa rank within the whole globe (13,315 in the US) and is putting out an astonishing two to three articles a day. This is a step by step guide of how blogging can truly help you escape the 9 to 5 and build a business around what you love. Here are some more stats on James from theinfopreneneur.net:

Hit an Alexa Rank of 50,000 in 3 months starting from nothing

Over 4,500 comments left on 220 posts published in 3 months

Averaging 4,000 page views a day

Guest posts featured on ExtremeJohn and DavidRisley and featured by BloggerIllustrated

To cap it all off he works a 60hr full time job and have a young family and with no education and an IQ of 94

So I sent over some questions to James i.e. ‘The Infopreneur’ and he responded with a video post to help answer some questions about his amazing success in the blogosphere and how others can do the same.

Hopefully this helps encourage others that within 3 months you can easily be killing it on your own blog, all it takes is a LOT of hard work. But as James can tell you, the work is worth it. James ultimately has plans of Escaping the 9 to 5 forever and this blog has paved the way for him to do so by building a loyal audience.
