This is probably one of the most popular questions for people who have just learned the importance and benefits of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). So how does one perform on page optimization.
Well, I’ll make this post one for the newbies who do not know anything about HTML and uses wordpress.
First is to download and install the “All In One SEO Pack” wordpress plugin. This plugin really helps a lot in terms of wordpress on page SEO. It optimized your title tags, meta tags, and other SEO technical stuff. For advanced users, you can tweak these setting. I guess this plugin is popular because it simply works out of the box. The default setting are already good. Just activate the plugin and you’re good to go.
Second would be to use your keywords on the titles of your blog post. So if you are making a post about the “Haiti Earthquake survivors” and you know that people will search for that keyword, then add that keyword to the title of your post.
So how would you know if people will be searching for that keyword? Well, that’s a whole new topic and it is called “Keyword Research”. I’ll probably reserve that one for another post. But let me give one simple technique you can use.
Try using google and type in a keyword. You will notice that google will suggest a bunch of keywords as you type. These are the keywords that people are searching for so use it.
Third, is to use the keyword inside the body of your blog post. Don’t overdo this one. Just mention it like 2-3 times is enough. It is also good to add variations of the keyword and mention related words. So in our example if you are targeting “Haiti Earthquake Survivors”, you might mention words like
“magnitude”
“port-au-prince”
“rescue”
and similar terms that is related to your keyword.
Fourth on page SEO tip you can perform would be to optimize the permalinks. I often like to use either
/%category%/%postname%/
or
/%postname%/
Having a blog with urls like http://www.escapingthe9to5.com/?p=123 does not help in terms of SEO. So make sure you check your permalink settings.
Fifth, would be about the use of images. Instead of having a filename like file1.jpg it would be best to use your keyword as the filename. Something like “haiti-earthquake.jpg”. And still on the issue of images. It is advisable to add an “alternate text” for your images. In wordpress, you can set the properties of the images in the post. Here’s a screenshot so you can see where to put it.
Lastly, go to your “Settings >> Writing”. At the lower portion, there is a “Update Services”. Go to http://pingler.com, copy the list of services and paste it in your “update services”. What this does is that after you publish a blog post, your wordpress will notify “ping” these services which will help you get links and traffic back to your blog.
I guess that’s it. Those are the most important onpage SEO stuff for the newbies who wants to have their blogs optimized without really knowing anything about HTML.
How to do Off Page SEO yourself: the Easy way!
I want to share with you some of my secrets in doing SEO. These simple tips are applicable to both newbie and veteran SEO.
Now that onpage SEO is done, here is what I would do next.
First, I will perform social bookmarking. Whenever I make a blog post that I feel contains a really good and solid content, I would try to bookmark it in Digg, reddit, del.icio.us, mixx, and other social bookmarking sites.
Second, promote it in Facebook. Once you shared a link in facebook, it will appear in you friend’s feed. Even if your friends don’t visit your blog often, by promoting it in facebook they will know that you have a new post and thus, if the topic appeals to them, they will read it. The best part is, it would be easy for them to share it with their friends too. So there’s a viral component to it.
Third, promote it in twitter. I think a lot of people check their twitter more than they check their emails. I remember the days before there were mobile phones. The “in” thing was a “beeper/pager”. Think of twitter as an online “pager” and you can “mass page” your followers with one click.
Plus there’s also a viral component to it as your followers can re-tweet your message.
Fourth, would be to post comments in other blogs similar to yours. I’m not saying spam those blogs but rather, put some really good comments. Something that would add value to the conversation. Now whenever you post a comment, it will ask for your name, email, and URL. Just put the URL you wanted to promote in the URL field. Being able to mingle with the people in your niche would also help you brand yourself.
Other traditional link building methods still work and it’s worth the effort such as directory submission, article marketing, making guest posting in other blogs, forum signature, yahoo answers, setup linkwheels, make press release..etc.
So for you veteran SEOs, here’s the secret SEO technique.
“DO IT EVERYDAY”
That’s it. The reason why people are not getting the rank they wished for is thay they’re too lazy to do the work. If you think you have the best content for the keyword you have, go ahead and promote it.
