Facebook is in the black: Social Media = Big Business

Gone are the days of “but how will Facebook ever monetize” because in a let down for social media critics everywhere… Facebook is actually in the black. Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook’s 25 year old founder) said on Tuesday’s blog that the positive cash flow will cement the social media giant as something that will be around for “the long term”. As if we ever doubted that Mark, at least people of my generation never did.

But as much as it pleases me that Mark Zuckerberg is even richer today than he was a week ago (and it does please me, freaking good for him! He’s 25 that’s amazing) what effect does Facebook’s turn to profitability mean for us little guys. Well for one it means that this won’t be the last we see of social media, instead social media sites inspired by Facebook will probably become more aggressive in seizing market share while they can and monetizing it as fast as they can.

Facebook being in the black shows how fast and furious a social media company can grow and as they continue to post profits they will become a blueprint of how much in advertising dollars a person networked on MySpace, Facebook or Twitter is really worth. For me this inspired another burst of social media enthusiasm, in basic terms if they can do it… so can I.

I’m not planning on building the next great social media platform, but instead I’m trying my damnedest to cash in on the multitude of social media sites out there. Facebook making money, especially outside of their enormous operating costs is a great thing… it shows that social media members, an often fickle crowd, at least are buyers. And if buyers will click on banner and PPC ads from Facebook they probably will click on the links I post and the honest reviews I give great affiliates.

I’m not looking to make a billion dollars by 25 like Mark, I just want my own, tiny piece of the pie. Good luck getting yours too and feel free to post comments below or tell me if I missed anything.
