So I’ve been in Vegas for the last few weeks and have been absolutely slammed with work, work, work. But fun work so it’s all worth it… If you’d like to see me interviewing poker players check out my stint at pokerstatic.com. Anyways hanging around the World Series with people who make more in a week than most people make in a year got me really thinking (like “why didn’t I learn poker at 15″), mostly about personal branding that is. So after getting home from a 12 hour day I decided to film this short video on how to become a remarkable personal brand and the reinvention of Maren Kate.

If you’ve been dying to reinvent your own personal brand or have a question feel free to shout out below.

Nice video, Maren. And a word about poker players – for every poker player who makes it big, there are probably a thousand or more who go broke. I used to play poker in college and only made a modest amount of money (it was enough to pay the bills). The biggest obstacle for me was how unrewarding it was.

The difference between making money in poker and making money in business can be summed up in one sentence: In poker, when you make money, someone loses money. In business, when you make money, you are providing value to someone's life (hopefully).

Sorry for the slightly off-topic note. :)

So there's the look, the message, the platform, and the…..style? What's the fourth component?

It's “The partnerships” can't believe I forgot it… partnerships are super important when it comes to establishing any brand.

It's true :) You are right, I'd pick business any day of the week.

“The partnerships”… DUDE! I posted this in a reply to one of your posts a month ago

“…if you don't mind working out in NY for a minute ;) hit me back at jeremyaragon@gmail.com if your interested” and you apparently did not take my offer seriously, …bummer for the Vayner crew…

Great video Maren Kate! I never thought about inventing my personal brand, but I think it definitely is important. I guess I have to really figure out from the blogs I write in which one I should really focus on and build a 'brand' around it. I have a blog about fitness and a blog about food in the local area where I live. I think those are my two main focus blogs because those are two topics I enjoy. Or, can I build a personal brand for each? I'd think that would be difficult though. What do you think?

That's good advice Maren, and I would have totally agreed with you a few months ago. However, I have a slight different view on that now: While branding yourself is important (having a unique look, own consistent style etc.), the most important aspect of branding/marketing is what you do.

Instead of writing or talking about being awesome, one actually needs to do something awesome. All the big players out there are famous because of what they do. The style is just the icing on the cake. This makes complete sense to me now, and that's why I got myself into more projects, that will turn out to be awesome in one way or another.

    Hey Maren Kate

I'm just about to redo my personal branding and wanted to know your thoughts on having a personal .com website.

My .com domain name that i owned just expired and my former dodgy domain name company bought it and wont sell it back to me.

Do you have any advice on picking a good .com domain name to use for your personal branding homepage?

That's true. Just look at the personal growth blogger Steve Pavlina. He writes about finishing college in three semesters, going to jail for shoplifting as a teenager, and how personal development changed his life. He tells a lot of interesting personal stories and how he's overcome hardships.

    Hey Maren,

It has been a little while since I have been around the blogosphere but I am back! I am no expert but I think that half the battle is the presentation or how your branded. I can't really think of any good exampled right now other than named/off named brand cereal which may not fit what I wanted to say. Oh well :(
How did you like your time in Vegas? That is still on my list of to do's in my life.
