This is part 2 of the getting your MBA series. Don’t let the title throw you off, we are still on the topic of becoming your own Mobile Business Administrator (MBA)… but now we get to talk about the fun stuff, getting rich by letting your dreams run wild.\
In a book called The E Myth (something I recommend ALL entrepreneurs read) Michael Gerber talks about the way massive corporations are started is by beginning with the end in mind. Not only in mind, mind you, but with the end or “goal” being used as the very first step to success. In plain English? This means dream big, pick the dream that fits your entrepreneurial vision best & then tell yourself ‘this is where we are going’ and never look back…
One of the most potent examples of this is a story Gerber tells about Tom Watson, the founder of IBM. To those of you who really want to know how to become rich this short story lays out the golden keys to true success.
“IBM is what it is today for three special reasons. The first reason is that, at the very beginning, I had a very clear picture of what the company would look like when it was finally done. You might say I had a model in my mind of what it would look like when the dream-my vision- was in place.
The second reason was that once I had that picture, I then asked myself how a company which looked like that would have to act. I then created a picture of how IBM would act when it was finally done.
The third reason IBM has been so successful was that once I had a picture of how IBM would look when the dream was in place and how such a company would have to act, I then realized that, unless we began to act that way from the very beginning we would never get there. In other words, I realized that for IBM to become a great company it would have to act like a grate company long before it ever became one.”
This short story rocked my world when I read it at the start of my entrepreneurial adventures, and every time since it has shaken my business plans to their core & allowed me to come out stronger afterward. So whether you want to start a purse company, a coffee shop or have plans to launch the next billion dollar social media network, start with the end in mind.
How does this tie into getting your Mobile Business Administrator-ship? Well when I started, with the end in mind, I forced my whole business model to mold around the idea that I would never have an ‘office’ and could run my business from anywhere… whether it was making $1000 a month or $100,000. Now as my online & offline businesses begin to really pick up I can scale that success with the end in mind. Nothing changes and all (or most) systems are in place, because even when I was making 50 bucks a week I was acting like I was making bank. And no not acting like I was rich but acting like a big company would act, getting my finances in order, systemizing things & bringing on the key people needed for success.
So if you really want to get your MBA in mobility & freedom, or even if you just want to know how to become rich in the future (possibly the very near future) please take the advice given by Tom Watson of IBM and begin with the end in mind. Sculpt your business in your mind to exactly what you want it to one day be, then starting acting as if… sooner than later you’ll begin to see the results & when they come in droves you’ll have the systems set in place to handle it. And trust me, that is a good feeling
