Tracking Your Blog’s Success through Alexa

by Maren Kate on February 7th, 2010

The Breakdown

Alrighty… so here is the breakdown. Today I checked my Alexa rating, which was actually better than I thought it would be. But still, not great. No worries though, I’ve only been blogging on Escaping the 9 to 5 for 6 months now. Still… it is very important that each and everyone of you who blogs go check your Alexa rating now, this will help you see where you are and then compare and contrast to see where you WILL be in the future.

After I checked my stats I also checked the links of some of my favorite blogs like:

Iwillteachyoutoberich.com

Ittybiz.com

Smartpassiveincome.com

Lifedestiny.net

Viperchill.com

The best alexa rate was Iwillteachyoutoberich.com but Ramit is also a best selling author, still it was good to see how great the people I look up to are doing and also see where I want to be within the next 6 months. I know it seems ridiculous to think I could climb 60,000 points in 6 months but heck… why not shoot for the stars?

How I’ll Try Do It!!

Firstly it means I need to seriously jump start my blogging, I already post almost every day but now I will have to make sure I do that no matter what… 7 days a week. Also I will need to make sure that my content is A+ and maybe I’ll even check my spelling!

Secondly I’ll be doing a lot more videos, which I think is the best underused medium online.

Thirdly I will be launching something SUPER special on Monday night, which I’ve been working on for weeks which I created to provide TONS of great value for free and as ‘link bait’ to coax more in bound links coming to Mama.

So what is your Alexa ranking? Also if it isn’t where you want to be what are you going to do to fix it?

  • I haven't enjoyed so much in a while, I didn't even know there are more than 25 million websites online, but I guess I am the proof =)
That's going to be a long way...

    Best regards,

    Andrés
  • I've been using this a ton lately too... if you want to make a healthy competition of it to reach a tangible goal by a certain date I'd be more than game.
  • darrenvilardo
I didnt even know that existed, thanks for the info! We will do some business soon!
  • My Alexa rating is junk and is definitely not where I would like it to be. I have been live for almost two years now and wish I had paid more attention to it earlier on. Oh well - I guess you learn somehow. Good luck moving up!
  • Hey mine was seriously CRAP like less than 2 months ago, i notice it compounds the more you have so don't give up!~
  • You've got me with Alexa, I'll have to check that out. You're right about video blogging--severely underrated and something I need to jump on board with soon!
  • I know, I think people put off doing videos till they are established, i put it off because I am kind of shy... but I need to get on it :)
  • You shy? No way, you seem totally confident and natural with the Camera.
  • Hey Maren, thanks for another great post! I think we hang out at the same blogs, that's why I always see your name pop up in the comments area.

I've never really checked my own Alexa ranking to be honest, as I try not to distract myself from the most important aspect of blogging - content. But that's just my own business model. It's definitely great to be ranked up there!

By the way, I love Iwillteachyoutoberich, Ittybiz, and SmartPassiveIncome! I totally dig their stuffs. And you've got some great pictures there. Keep up the wonderful work.
  • Thanks so much Ken :)
  • 1 month and 1week ago, our Alexa was in the region of twenty million. 1 month and 2 days ago I took James' advice and it had come down to 8.5 million. Today it's just under 900k with a 1 month estimate of just under 400k.

I put this down to regular daily blog posts, getting out there visiting and commenting on other blogs and sharing blog posts via Twitter. And we're a charity blog so not even in a highly sort after market so if we can do it, I know you can :)

Alexa is just one tool but it's an indication and can encourage you to keep going.
  • That is awesome! Good job :) I'll be sure to check out your blog!
  • Hi Maren,

Just wanted to give you some re-assurance and motivation here, My site is 3 months old and I'm closing in on the big hitters. You can absolutely do it and are doing it, so keep up the amazing work.

I have just rated your site (your first rating by the way) 5 stars on Alexa, go check it out.

Also I have an invite for you which I'll be sending out next week to my invite only forum which will help your ranking no end.

    Speak soon

    J
  • Thanks I didn't even know you could rate sites on Alexa! Crazy gotta go check that out too :) It always boggles me how little I know and how much info is out there! Yeah your site has grown exponentially, think its all the blogging you do or what part do you think has helped that alexa rank?
  • I think the way I post and comment has a lot to do with it, To be honest I'm not sure but at the moment I think the site is ranked about 20,000 in the US ish.

When you going to guest post for me anyway? lol
  • Good stuff, nice site list too ;-)

There is a decent firefox plugin called Quirk Search Status: http://www.quirk.biz/searchstatus/

It shows you the Google Page Rank and also the Alexa Rank of all pages you visit.
  • Wow thanks that will be much more timely than going back to Alexa after each site I visit to check its ranking... Cheers!
  • Good shout brother I use this too
  • It sounds like your making stuff happen. Way to be.
  • Thank you J.D. and thanks for reading!
  • okay, so I've heard of Alexa before but never checked into it. I'm not too concerned but it is kinda cool to see where I stack up. I don't know if the lower the number the better it is but my Alexa traffic ranks is 302,263, traffic in US is 65,829 and I've got 23 sites linking in. It does show a + 300% increase in Reach and a drop of -492,081 in the last 3 months. I hope that's all good info.

  • Heck yeah that is good stuff :) I think the sites linking in is one of the most important parts of the whole thing... but don't quote me, I'm still doing my homework on good ole Alexa.
  • Hi Maren,
I never really gave Alexa much thought until I was looking at three figures for traffic in my Awstats every day. When I reached that level, my Alexa rank was right at 5,200,000. As of the date of your post I stand at 1,877,753. Bloggers Market turns one year old, next month. Ya know what I think? .......... I think this Alexa road is a long one. I need GPS for Bloggers!
  • Hey Jeffrey,

GPS for bloggers, there's your next post title!

  • Hi James,
My next post title you say, ........ and go where with it? Get it? GPS! .... Where with it!
    I crack myself up sometimes!
  • That is great how much you climbed so congrats! But yeah I think the Alexa ranking is a good way to check on your stats and make goals for yourself based on the blogs you like or follow. How many posts do you have in total?
  • Right now, I have 60 posts. However, I have removed the "Pillar" content that I started the blog with. I plan on offering it as a FREE PDF Download for the Beginner. I thought that it would be better for the beginner that way instead of trying to ferret out what they needed from the archives.
  • Yep that is an awesome idea for more visitors and views! Cheers and keep me posted with your success!
