Read this or DIE!

Written by: Maren Kate // Comments

If that doesn't scare you I don't know what will...

So you are reading this… that means you’ve put off death, momentarily, but really it just means you decided to click on my cheesy headline. It’s not a lie either, whether you read this or don’t you’ll die eventually… sorry folks, but death isn’t something we should be so afraid to talk about and only take your own mortality so seriously it helps lead a happy, healthy life.

So what is this post about? Well its about bringing eyeballs to your blog posts… which is a BIG positive whether you are an entrepreneur, enthusiast, business or even a professional blogger. Here are the key things I’ve noticed that increase traffic, increase blog posts getting read and increase comments/interaction on your site:

  1. Read other people’s stuff. Nothing gets my creative juices going like reading a book from someone like Seth Godin or reading one of my favorite new blogs like White Hot Truth. Also by reading other’s blogs and books you learn how to write well yourself, without having to spend 5 years in college like I did :(
  2. Comment on other people’s stuff. Whether this is via retweeting a blog post, commenting on an interesting article online or just emailing someone and saying ‘wow your book changed my life’ this is a great way to get your face out there and get viral. When you comment a lot people who also read the blog will start wondering what your deal is and click through to your own site and the blog’s creator will take interest. It is a great way of networking, finding mentors and getting eyes to your site without spending any $dough$
  3. Match your title and text keywords. This may seem like boring SEO stuff but its easy & important, chose a few keywords that are relevant to your blog & niche (i.e. horse breeding, thoroughbred breeders & horse breeders in Omaha) and try to create a few blog posts with matching titles and mentions of the keyword within the text. Sound confusing? Ask me more questions about it in the comments or go over to www.IttyBiz.com and search for their SEO school ebook, best money ever for SEO training and super funny!
  4. Write like a 1930’s newspaperman (or woman). That mean catch the reader’s eye with the topic you chose to write a post on.. don’t make it too long and don’t worry about perfect sentence structure. Its called a grabber for a reason, right as many ‘grabbers’ as you can and you’ll see people staying on your site longer and coming back more often.
  5. Be active in the social web. This means don’t JUST try to collect twitter followers, instead focus on INTERACTING with people on Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Youtube, wherever has the most to do with your niche. If you are in Brazil find people to network with on Orkut (the countries’ largest social media platform) if you are a video freak find people to interact with on Viddler, Vimeo or TubeMogul.
  6. Ask for interviews/to guest post. Both have gone over well for me, I’ve asked people way to big for me to do interviews & they have said yes… most notably Craig of Craigslist and I have asked people with blogs much bigger than mine to do a guest post & they have said yes… most recently here on subject2.com

Anything I missed? Mad at me because I threatened you with death to get you to read this post… well if so COMMENT BELOW and let me know you’re out there… it gets lonely in the blogosphere :’(

  • Great Post, but Ninjas can't die, so I have nothing to worry about. BUHAHA
  • I totally agree with number 2, if you can comment on other blogs and be topical (i.e. add value to the bloggers post) then it can be suprising how many clicks you get from those comments. Well worth the time invested and it helps to build relationships.
  • Too true, and it helps you build a direct relationship with the blogger to whose community you are always adding value :)
  • Hmmmmmm, how come I see a lot of my readers over here? I see Greg, LeJon, Justin and Scott.

Maybe this guest posting thing really is working Maren. Maybe, I should guest post for you Maren and start stealing your loyal readers ;)

Great Suggestions Maren! I have done a few of those with some good success, but it also reminded me of a few more items I'd like to try. Getting guest posters is on my To-Do List.
  • Hi Maren, Just letting you know I'm still out there and still reading. I've been writing consistently on my blog. I recently got contacted from a larger blog who wants to reprint or repost one of my blogs. With any luck I'll get a boost in traffic. I'd love for comments to start cropping up too. I've got lots of reading to do about how to make this blogging gig work for me. Your point about using freelance writing as a means to start a consultancy is something I'm trying to figure out. Thanks for the tips.
  • That is awesome Shaun! Let me know if you need any more help, also I have something coming down the pipes that will be REALLY awesome and totally free... I think it can help super charge what you are doing too :)
  • Maren-

Regarding you number 2 above. Do you find that if you ask for comments you get more comments? The reason I ask, is that a lot of people state to do that in their posts, and to be honest I'm not a fan of it. I'd rather the blog be "comment worthy" than have to ask for comments? Does that make sense or am I just being too cynical? By the way your blogs are comment worthy.
  • Hmm... I may see your point Justin, I never thought of it that way but you are right... if you don't ask for comments the one you get will be A+ probably, but also if you ask for comments maybe it draws out the quieter readers and helps people that wouldn't normally interact start a conversation. I will tell you what though... I will try both angles and get back to you on which results in A. more comments and B. better quality comments.

    Cheers!
  • Problogger wrote a pillar post on blog comments. One of his tips is to ask for comments - a little extra nudge will not hurt.
  • I thought number two was a good one. I never thought of commenting to generate the interest of others. I just do it because in the next few months I will be doing the blog thing and I would like to have enough internet friends to read my material, pretty selfish huh? Seriously this was a great post. I look forward to more.
  • Thanks LeJon :) My Grandfather's name is Ratchford crazy! It really is a huge help... the commenting i mean... I have noticed so much more readers to my blog just in the last month by actively commenting on others each and every time I put out a post. Plus you learn a lot and make online friends!
  • You know whats funny, me and my father were not close so I really do not know many Ratchfords, lol. I signed up to receive your news letters so I look forward to learning alot. Take care!
  • You just do it so you can get internet stalkers LOL!! you know its true LeJon
  • Great post Maren! and thank you so much for bringing the heat on Subject2.com. You've really made an impression with the readers. I'm glad to have you.

    Ditto on what Greg said
  • No problem :) I like that this post is on title text and such and it shows that grabbing titles really do work since I had WAAY more clicks through on this title than I usually do on Twitter.
  • gregharris66720
Okay now did you find that pic or did you take the time to off a hot dog?
  • found it online, it seems like you can really find ANYTHING online
  • gregharris66720
Lol definitely deserves caps on the ANYTHING. I have seen things I didn't want to know existed...
