I drive all the time and instead of rocking out to MmmBop (am I dating myself?) or whatever is popular with the kiddies, I try to enlarge my gray matter (squishy brain area) by listening to audio books. Some of you might benefit greatly from doing the same as I believed I have consumed an entire MBA’s worth of knowledge in the last year from this method alone. You can easily take in two to three audio books a week if you listen to them religiously and nothing grows your business like learning from those who have been there.

The Magic of Thinking Big (by David Schwartz). This book is incredibly encouraging, uplifting and helps truly put you in the mindset of success. Though written decades ago the Magic of Thinking Big is one of the most highly recommended books for business owners and entrepreneurs ever.

Tribes (by Seth Godin). Tribes teaches you just that, how to build a tribe around your brand and create products/services that will last a lifetime. A great read for anyone thinking of starting a business or getting into a new project, Tribes will make you think and inspire you to greatness.

Think & Grow Rich (by Napoleon Hill). A cult classic that I think should be mandatory reading for ALL MBA’s and entrepreneurs alike. The greatest business minds in the world all point back to Hill’s classic book as the start of their entrepreneur’s journey. Truly this book teaches you how to think and grow rich.

The 80/20 Principle (by Richard Koch). Want to work less and make more? Want to be far more effective in your life without having to use more of your energy and time? The 80/20 principle is one of the cornerstone philosophies of great lifestyle design artists everywhere – it teaches how to get more out of less time in ALL aspects of your life and will change your mindset when it comes to ‘time management’ for good.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (by Stephen R. Covey). Would you like to be highly effective in your life? Do you need 7 tips to really lay out the road map? Ta Da! Here ya go… no need to thank me, your effectiveness is thanks enough!

The New Pyscho-Cybernetics (by Maxwell Maltz). This book is the perfect blend of science and motivational thinking. It’s like “The Secret” on steroids – and not ridiculously corny! (P.S. That chick pretty much took ALL of her ground breaking ideas from this book written 40 years ago!). Also a great thing is this new edition is edited by the great Dan Kennedy!

Outliers (by Malcolm Gladwell). Many people know of Gladwell’s other classics such as The Tipping Point and Blink but few have read Outliers a true classic in my mind. “It is not the brightest who succeed,” Gladwell says in the book, “Nor is success simply the sum of the decisions and efforts we make on our own behalf. It is, rather, a gift. Outliers are those who have been given opportunities — and who have had the strength and presence of mind to seize them.”

Farewell to Summer (by Ray Bradbury). Why is this science fiction type book in here? Because it’s my darn list & I love Ray Bradbury – you should too, it’ll make you popular, beautiful and gold flakes will fall down on you wherever you go (promise!). Besides those bonuses this book is an epic read, Bradbury’s writing style is beautiful and it’s a nice escape from reality.

Man’s Search for Meaning (by Viktor E. Frankl).

Viktor Frankl talks about people’s search for meaning even in the midst of surviving the Holocaust death camps. This perspective helps us see no matter how bad we think we have it we’ve got nothing on this guy – and he still perseveres while finding a way to encourage others. Frankl’s book is uplifting, eye opening and truly a beautiful work – everyone should read it at least once. It makes it very clear that money really isn’t everything.

Linchpin (by Seth Godin). Another amazing instant classic from Godin. In this book he teaches you about how anyone can create truly meaningful art as well as how to become the linchpin that is necessary to your businesses success. If you are going to read one book from Godin this year – make it Linchpin – it’ll rock your world.

Getting Things Done (David Allen). Though the concepts in Getting Things Done may take you a few reads/listens to really understand it can truly change your life and productivity if you give it a chance. GTD has revolutionized the way I work and organize – it’s the reason I can work on 7 projects at the same time with nothing falling through the cracks. I’d say the best book on productivity and organization I’ve ever experienced.

Buy-ology (by Martin Lindstrom). This groundbreaking book is based off a 7 million dollar scientific study into why people buy. If you are selling ANYTHING in your business (which I think go hand in hand) you need to get this book a.s.a.p. It will change the way you look at the consumer economy and evolve your marketing to trigger what matters most.

The Art of War (by Sun Tzu). Whether your into War or Peace (get it??) this book is a must read for entrepreneur’s everywhere. It’s ideas and philosophies go far beyond actual war and into the depths of what drives people and creates amazing ventures. The Art of War is a beautifully written ancient text that is still 100% applicable in today’s world.

Go Get These Now!!

P.S. Oh you noticed I didn’t link to any of these books? That’s because they are audio books people! Type it into Itunes or Google it (let your fingers do the walking)! Or you could be an uber zealot and go to this ancient thing that people used to frequent called The Library and get it them for free!

Sweet, can't wait to buy some of these! Never thought of getting the audio versions.

  • http://blog.tysonwilliams.com/ Tyson Williams

Awesome list… adding a few of those titles to my Wish List on Audible.com – Thanks!

  • http://www.learningguitarnow.com John

Great list! I'll have to listen to the ones I haven't heard yet. I also really like Zigler's Goals and Selling.

Thank you for the recommendations! I love your lists.

  • timbrownson

Difficult to argue with t hose although I was really disappointed with Linchpin. Love Seths work 99% of the time, but I thought that was weak.

I really liked Outliers although I thought Blink was better and I love Gladwells delivery on audio products.

I came via Tim's tweet. Great list. Time to hit up the library. I always borrow it from the library first then buy it if I love it. I still buy too many books, but most of the time I'm just referencing them, so it's all good.

  • http://twitter.com/CrisBuckley Cris Buckley

Maren, a great list—several that were on my buy list of books. But audio–YES! Why didn't I think of that? Such a great use of time!

  • http://twitter.com/HazloPorTi Hazlo por Ti

    Maren,

-Magic of Thinking Big, long in the shopping basket, time to go for it.

-Tribes, great although I am more into Purple Cow, I haven't yet reached the point where building a community makes sense to me (it got me into creating a Ning community but couldn't generate enough buzz… I had no passion, product or content!)

-Think and Grow Rich, honestly, too “spiritual” for me, but the idea of the mastermind group… priceless.

-The 80/20 Principle, you will never, ever look at your partner the same way, 80 or 20?

-The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, good, but I agree with you in regards of Godin's Linchpin, being an artist is not being efficient.

-The New Pyscho-Cybernetics, mmm, I'll check it out.

-Outliers, better than Blink and to the level of Tipping Point, loved the “right place in the right time” M&A law story and couldn't put down the cultural miscommunication in the air.

-Farewell to Summer, if you haven't yet, I challenge you to read my own favourite: Atlas Shrugged, and tell me you don't fill like Danny (please read it before the bring up the film, I think they are working on it)

-Man’s Search for Meaning, dunno, I'll have a look at it… although I try not to search for meaning, I try to give it.
-Linchpin, my current friend, I am finding it a bit “how to keep your daytime job in the new era”, but we all know that a job is NOT what we are after. Really good insights though, amigdala!!

-Getting Things Done, holding on to it, and you were the last straw. I just bought the audiobook (literally).

-Buy-ology, I stopped at Why We Buy plus a degree in market research… you will never, ever will be able to walk in a store with the same eyes. It is like taking the red pill…

-The Art of War, well… I'm more into Maquiaveli's The Prince, more “western.”

I got a copy of Tony “Zappos” Hsieh Deliverinng Happiness (you can still get advance copies to review on http://www.deliveringhappinessbook.com/) and if you are already familiar with Zappos core values, the first half of the book tell the updated story of Richard Branson's “Screw it, Let's Do It.” They will get you going…

    Great list !

You just give me two new books to read (I prefer books).

The Art of War is like a Bible for me. I even began writing a new version of it. If you like this style, try also The Book of Five Ring or Go Rin No Sho written by Miyamoto Musashi. Those two are Artwork in strategy.

    Enjoy listening (or reading) !

I've got think and grow rich, and almost got getting things done.. but the audio was to bland on the version I found. I have to have an engaging reader.

Two I love though are Jack Canfield's Success Principles and T. Harv Eker's Millionaire Mind. :)

Thanks for sharing, audiobooks are great! I'd like to add Seth Godin's Dip and Paulo Coelho´s Achemist to the list. Both very inspirational for entrepreneurs.

    Hey Maren!

I've tried audio books while driving but somehow it's a little distracting and either I end up not driving well or I end up not absorbing the content as much.

Maybe it's because I'm a guy and can't multitask like you:)

However, audio books for the ipod while on public transport or traveling are pretty awesome!

    Ciaociao

These are all great books. I know because I've read basically four of them but not listened to them. Linchpin, tribes, Think and grow rich, the magic of thinking big. If I could ad one, it would have to be How to win friends….yea you know what I am talking about I hope.

Okay for those who somehow been living in outer space its “how to win friends and influence people”. I know for sure you've read it right Maren?

Now Buyology I've skipped it like every time I go to the bookstore, but now it's on my list for sure.

    Thanks again!

  • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Audiobooks – never tried them – it's tooo distracting, but Seth Godin's books are always ass-kicking. I have read all of his latest books – and listened to/watched his infamous speeches. Did you see his latest with Penelope from the brazen careerist ? His last line: “Whatever you like to do – aim for a dent in the universe !”
    Epic stuff !

  • http://the-dame.com The Dame

what a brilliant idea, wish i had have thought of this earlier, im always driving and the radio is always on! i coulda been a genius by now!

  • http://moneyandrisk.com Kim | Money and Risk

    Ray Bradbury, Yay.

Great list that I will never listen to. I'm not a verbal person and another distraction in the car = accident.

Haven't heard of Psycho Cybernetics before. Thanks. I'll check it out.

Art of War – incredible book. Best to keep referring back and use snippets.

Yes do check out pyscho cybernetics- it blew me away :)

  • http://www.Escapingthe9to5.com/ Maren Kate

Haha, its true it makes driving so much more educational :)

Alchemist – I have heard SO much about that – must go get it :)

  • http://www.Escapingthe9to5.com/ Maren Kate

Audio = Awesome in my mind :)

  • http://www.Escapingthe9to5.com/ Maren Kate

My mom is the biggest library buff ever – and I love the 'brary too but there is something about knowing those books are mine! I'm greedy that way :)

  • http://www.Escapingthe9to5.com/ Maren Kate

Its funny I have heard such mixed opinions on Linchpin – like for the first hour I thought 'ehh' but the middle/end part I loved, especially the definitions of what is art and such. But I've heard a lot of disappointment on that book, guess that is the chance you take when you write books (hence why I write blogs- my ego can stay more insulated this way!) Lol. Also you are correct Blink was amazing too!

  • http://www.Escapingthe9to5.com/ Maren Kate

Thanks so glad you liked it!

  • http://www.Escapingthe9to5.com/ Maren Kate

Oh that is great – Zig Zigler is amazing I really need to read more of his stuff.

  • http://www.Escapingthe9to5.com/ Maren Kate

I didn't even know Audible had a wish list!

  • http://www.Escapingthe9to5.com/ Maren Kate

The audio versions really rock :) like for house work or running errands, its awesome.

  • http://blog.tysonwilliams.com/ Tyson Williams

Just like Amazon has a Wish List. Audible.com is now owned by Amazon.

  • http://www.wilsonusman.com/ Wilson Usman

Hey man, I actually went over to the site and I applied to get an advance. I am wondering how do you know if they are going to send it to you?

  • ralphcarlson

Me, I like the library but I'm an old guy. Also not in the car so much lately. Good list though.

  • http://onemillionby30.com/ Patrick Toerner

I am currently am listening to 'Think and Grow Rich' while I drive in my car, that is a weird coincidence.

This is an awesome list, I was looking for a list similar to this a few weeks back. Thanks for adding “to listen to” list!

On another side note, and made a side note that should be left out… I recently downloaded mmmbop. I don't know what I ever saw in that song!

Lastly, my favorite audiobook of all time is “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. If you haven't read/listened to it, I would definitely check it out.

  • http://twitter.com/HazloPorTi Hazlo por Ti

They just do Wilson. I thought exactly the same, specially living overseas, but these guys mean business. Two weeks after I signed in, Fedex called up at my little home outside London.

  • http://twitter.com/HazloPorTi Hazlo por Ti

I read Nassim Taleb words: “You only way to know whether you liked a book is if you re-read it -the rest is spin.” So true, so very true. Plus real books let you pass them along, highlight and be proud of the coffee stain (you know the one) and the random suicidal mosquito.

  • http://twitter.com/HazloPorTi Hazlo por Ti

Read location: 1. Walking (I mastered it after so many years, I should be in the next X-men film) 2. Hot bath. 3. Sofa after 1am, joined by the silence of the night and the power of getting absorb by the words.

Audio location: 1. Running (waaay better than music) 2. Driving (keeps evil road rage at bay) 3. Vacuum cleaning and doing the washing (4. It is not really a fourth, but once people get used to see you with the earphones one, they stop trying to interrupt you, it works! – This is TimFerrissian)

I came over here from Scott's blog at struggling investor. Great list. I have listened to half of them and will now add the other half to my wish list. I listen while working in my lab at work. Audible is by far the cheapest way i have found to get books. Avg cost $11/book.

I would strongly recommend buying the shorter cheaper books and using your credits to purchase the more expensive ones. (They have a subscription plan) It will save you money down the road. Thanks again for the list.

Maren, I followed your advide and just finished Getting Things Done on audio form… a bit formulaic for my taste, but I learnt to focus on the “next action”, and I know that just that will be worth a lot of peace down the line.

I also finished Linchpin by Godin, and while I liked it, it felt like Purple Cow for employees. Must read though if you are fine with working for someone else, not everyone wants to be a high-flying entrepreneur!

I have been thinking long and hard about when I felt the entrepreneur virus inside, and I think that it goes back to Richard Bach's John Livingstone Seagul. Short read, but powerful. It will make you apeace with feeling lonely in the crowd. You are not.
